What is Tae Kwon Do?Tae Kwon Do is the Korean art of self-defence and means "The Art of Hand and Foot Fighting".Translated from Korean, Tae means to jump, kick or smash with the foot, Kwon means to punch, strike or smash with the hand and Do is art, method or way. Tae Kwon Do indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self-defence, involving skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks, dodges and restraints. It is proven to be the most powerful system of self defense ever devised. But it is not just about the mere use of skilled movements rather about a more philosophical way of life particularly in instilling a concept and spirit of self imposed discipline, and inner peace. This is reflected by the tenets (or code of conduct) Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self control and Indomitable spirit . Tae kwon Do is a martial art that has an interesting if turbulent history. It has been found to date back to 50BC where tomb paintings show men in fighting stances practicing forms known as Taek Kyon, although it is believed that is origins go back 3000 years where it originated as self-defence against wild animals. This provides its practitioners with a link to a tradition and philosophy which is truly historic.Over the years it has been influenced by other styles. Karate was brought to Korea during the Japanese occupation which lasted from 1910 until the end of the second world war and influenced the quick straight line moves seen in today's Tae Kwon Do. The Japanese ordered eradication of Korean culture and its martial arts. It only survived in isolated communities where it was still practiced in secret. At the end of WWII many fighting styles arose, these all became unified in 1955 under the name Tae Soo Do. By 1957 some masters had adopted the name Tae Kwon Do to reconnect with its ancient Taek Kyon roots but the influence of karate can still be seen in the modern Tae Kwon Do.The art itself however has evolved with time to reflect the needs and aspirations of the modern martial artist. It became perfected in its present form by Major General Choi Hong Hi, and has been scientifically developed and modernised since its introduction to the world on 11th April 1955. In these days of violence and intimidation which seem to plague our modern societies, Tae Kwon Do enables the weak to posses a fine weapon to defend themselves. |
